FYI: Information regarding upcoming local environmental and health event

The Blacksburg Police Department will be participating in a nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back” initiative that seeks to prevent increased pill abuse and theft.  This is a collaborative effort with our department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to collect unused, unneeded, or expired prescription drugs.

The national event will take place on Saturday, April 30th, 2011, from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.   Members of the Blacksburg Police Department and the DEA will be on hand, locally, at the Blacksburg Parks & Recreation Department’s Community Center located at 725 Patrick Henry Drive as a prescription drug collection site.

Many people are not aware that medicines left at home are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.  Prescription drug abuse in the United States is increasing at an alarming rate.  A majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

In addition, many do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicines, often discarding them
in the trash, down the drain or flushing them down the toilet - all potential safety and health hazards.  When disposed of in this manner, they end up at your local wastewater treatment facility, which may or may not have the ability to completely remove the medications and their byproducts during the treatment process.  This water is then released into local waterways and has the potential to harm fish and wildlife.  Pharmaceuticals and their byproducts have been detected in waterways and research is currently underway to understand their effect on the environment. For more information about this initiative, call Blacksburg Police Department Community Outreach at (540) 961-1811 or visit   Directions to the Community Center can be found on this site under “Collection Sites” as well as information on items that will NOT be accepted.

Kid's Tech University Hands-on Exhibit

AWRA will be presenting a hands-on exhibit at Kid's Tech University on Saturday, March 26th from 1:30-3:30pm!  Please contact Emily ( if you would like to help out with this event!

The Student Chapter of American Water Resources Association will be hosting an exhibit with locally caught macro-invertebrates (“bugs”) in containers for students to try and spot. They will show how each animal is used in stream monitoring techniques and which ones are worth more "points" than others. The exhibit will allow for kids to explore what life on the bottom of a river looks like and how our everyday activities can affect what they’ll find.  This will allow kids to see how stream monitoring works, what factors are used to test stream quality, how to use a bug identification key, how bugs can be an indicator of water pollution, and how learning about streams can be fun!

Seminar this Week!!

I will be hosting Dr. Jon Benstead from the University of Alabama for our EEB seminar this week on Thursday, 3 March 2011 in Franlin Auditorium at 3:30pm. Jon’s talk is titled “Seasonal changes in the structure and function of a spring-fed stream ecosystem in arctic Alaska.” Jon is a freshwater ecologist with relatively broad research interests and experience, with a focus on stoichiometric relationships in ecology, particularly the role of coupled cycles of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in food webs and ecosystem-level processes. To examine stoichiometric linkages, he combines classic bio-energetic methods for quantifying energy acquisition and flow with an explicit stoichiometric perspective on nitrogen and phosphorus availability and demand. Please refer to his website as well for further information (  If you would like to meet with Jon on Thursday, please let me know by Wednesday (
