Amman Imman: Water is Life Seminar

Thank you all for coming out to hear our special seminar speaker by Debra Kahn on Amman Imman: Water is Life, a charity that constructs deep wells to provide clean water for underserved people living in the impoverished Azawak region of Niger, Africa.

It was a successful end of the semester event attended by dozens of students and faculty.  I think we all went away a little more inspired and knowledgeable about the limited water resources in Africa.  At the end of Debra's talk, AWRA presented her a check from our fundraisers in support of her charity.

After the seminar, some of us joined Debora that evening for dinner at Gillies.  Gillies sponsored a charity night where part of the profits went toward Amman Imman that evening.

The next day some AWRA members met up with Debora for lunch.
Overall it was great seminar and a pleasure to meet such an amazing woman and support such a wonderful charity.

New River Water Watchers Workshop

Last Saturday a few AWRA members completed a citizen monitoring program through the National Committee for the New River.  We will be using this chemical assessment to monitor a local stream.
Courtney taught us how to measure dissolved oxygen, pH, water clarity, and bacteria.

Tania measures the pH through comparing color change to the reference

Caitlin helps pour water into a the tub to measure turbidity

Thank you all for coming out to participate in this training workshop.  Courtney will be doing a refresher course sometime in the fall before we start our monthly monitoring

World Water Day Success!

Thank you all for coming out and taking the taste test challenge.  It was a fun event and people were surprised by what they thought was tap water/bottled water.  A big thanks goes out to Justin and his crew from the environmental coalition for teaming up with AWRA on this event.

The final score was 36 guessed correct and 26 incorrect.  Some people said they could taste the chlorine  after taste in the tap water and/or the plastic taste in the bottled water.  The most interesting comments were those that said they could taste chemicals but they didn't know if it was the extra minerals in the bottled water or the treated chemicals in the tap.  Overall a successful and eye opening event for all.
