While downtown today enjoying the International Street Festival, I noticed a sign in a window about a fundraiser for water. It's called the WaterWORKS Benefit and it will be at Cabo Fish Taco tonight (March 31) beginning at 10:00 PM.

Congratulations to Beth and Eirika for receiving the AWRA outstanding member of the year award at the College of Natural Resources and Environment banquet last night. It was a good group of AWRA members that came out to support and enjoy the evening together.

Last Saturday a few AWRA members completed a citizen monitoring program through the National Committee for the New River. We will be using this chemical assessment to monitor a local stream.
Courtney taught us how to measure dissolved oxygen, pH, water clarity, and bacteria.
Tania measures the pH through comparing color change to the reference
Caitlin helps pour water into a the tub to measure turbidity
Thank you all for coming out to participate in this training workshop. Courtney will be doing a refresher course sometime in the fall before we start our monthly monitoring

TODAY: During the 4th Annual FGSA Symposium, the keynote speaker will feature water issues. Dr. Michael Campana from Oregon State Uni. will speak on Hydrophilanthropy. His talk is at 2:45 in Fralin Auditorium on the VT campus.
Some AWRA members met up with Dr. Campana for lunch yesterday.
It was nice to talk to a former national AWRA president and get the chance to share our experiences with water resources at Virginia Tech too.

Thank you all for coming out and taking the taste test challenge. It was a fun event and people were surprised by what they thought was tap water/bottled water. A big thanks goes out to Justin and his crew from the environmental coalition for teaming up with AWRA on this event.
The final score was 36 guessed correct and 26 incorrect. Some people said they could taste the chlorine after taste in the tap water and/or the plastic taste in the bottled water. The most interesting comments were those that said they could taste chemicals but they didn't know if it was the extra minerals in the bottled water or the treated chemicals in the tap. Overall a successful and eye opening event for all.
